Spirit Airlines Adds Four New Routes from Baltimore to Increase Service

Spirit Airlines, a carrier based out of Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI), has disclosed plans to launch four new routes, two of which are intercontinental. The ultra-low-cost airline will start offering flights to Boston, Portland, New Orleans, and San Diego in early May.

Portland International Airport (PDX) and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) are the first two airports on the flight schedule to receive flights. On May 9, planes will depart for Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) and San Diego International Airport (SAN). The following frequencies apply to each route:

Boston: Seven weekly flights

Portland: four weekly flights

Five weekly flights to New Orleans

San Diego: three weekly flights

Travellers on both ends of these itineraries will appreciate the options brought forth by this announcement. Baltimore/Washington International Airport expressed pleasure about the new additions on social networking site X, which was once known as Twitter.

Spirit Airlines' contemporary fleet of Airbus A320 family aircraft, with an average age of just 7.2 years, will be flying these routes. The carrier's fleet now consists of 17 A319s, 64 A320s, 85 A320neos, 30 A321s, and 11 A321neos, with additional orders for 40 A320neos and 71 A321neos.

Of the three airports serving the Washington, Baltimore area, BWI is in competition with Dulles International Airport (IAD) and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA). There were 11.1 million, 11.5 million, and 10.2 million passengers in 2022, according to passenger traffic statistics.

Spirit Airlines now operates one international route to Cancun (CUN), Mexico, and several local routes serving BWI. Remarkably, Boston was the fourth busiest route from BWI in the previous year, after Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, and Orlando.

Southwest Airlines (on routes to San Diego, Boston, and New Orleans) and Delta Air Lines (Boston) will compete with Spirit Airlines as it grows. JetBlue will have a clean path on the new Portland route, meanwhile, since it will stop operating the Baltimore-Boston route on May 1.
